LAJES [FLOOR SLABS] AND PILAR [COLUMN], 1997–2001

What rules this work, made at two moments, is the principle of displacement, now approached through weight, but previously explored by the artist through the definition of coordinates on the terrestrial globe or alignments and twistings of sculptural forms within the interior of architectural spaces. Lajes (1996–1997) was conceived for the exhibition Arte/Cidade III, and Pilar (1999–2001) for the exhibition Arte/Cidade IV, both in São Paulo.

The weight of the architectural constructions is dislocated onto various elements that are key to the structure – floor slabs, beams and columns. This movement is made in the structural mass, in keeping with the principle of a cross. A vertical intervention creates a horizontal tension (floor slabs), while a horizontal intervention creates a vertical tension (column). More than the cuts, these displacements impart a new notion of space, through our awareness of the implantation of another stability and, consequently, our perception of the construction as a whole, including those spaces that we are not observing.
